It is a resident bird of the Andean slopes, with a range that also reaches Ecuador and Peru. The species is placed in the cotinga family and is known for its chestnut crest, which gives it its common name. It has two subspecies, with the northern form occurring in Colombia and the southern form extending through Ecuador, Peru and into Bolivia.
