Chestnut-crowned Gnateater, Conopophaga castaneiceps, is a bird of the gnateater family found from Colombia through Ecuador to south-central Peru. It lives in discontinuous parts of the Andes and nearby slopes, including the western Andes, the Central and Eastern Andes, and the east slope in Peru. It is associated with subtropical and tropical rainforest, especially the forest interior where smaller growth appears in openings such as regrowing landslides. Four subspecies are recognised, and birds from the western slope of Colombia’s Central Andes may represent an unnamed form. The male has an orange-red crown and a white tuft behind the eye.
