Chestnut-eared Aracari

Chestnut-eared Aracari, Pteroglossus castanotis, is a toucan from western Amazonia to south-eastern Brazil in South America. It belongs to the family Ramphastidae and was described by Gould in 1834. Its range also extends through neighbouring countries in the region. The bird is known for the chestnut colouring on the lower nape in adults, which helps separate it from related forms. Two subspecies are recognised, with the southern one generally paler and showing a broader orange base on the bill. It uses a wide range of wooded and open habitats, often near water.
