Chilean Flicker, Colaptes pitius, is a woodpecker of Chile and south-western Argentina, where it lives in temperate and Mediterranean zones. It is mainly a bird of semi-open country, using forest edges and clearings, open woodland, riparian woodland, tree plantations and scrub. It is mostly resident, though it may move about locally. A notable feature is its strong link with the ground, where it forages for ants and their young, usually in family groups and only rarely in trees. It breeds from October to December and nests in cavities it excavates itself.
