Chilean Hawk

Astur chilensis (Philippi & Landbeck, 1864)

Chilean Hawk, Astur chilensis, is a bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, breeding in South America from central Chile and western Argentina to Tierra del Fuego. It is found in Andean forests, from sea level up to 2,700 m, although records above 1,000 m are uncommon. Some birds spend the winter in the lowlands of north-west Argentina. It was first described by Philippi and Landbeck in 1864. It has also been placed in the genus Accipiter, and its taxonomic treatment has been debated in relation to the bicoloured hawk.
