Chimango Caracara

Milvago chimango (Vieillot, 1816)

Chimango Caracara, Milvago chimango, is a bird of prey found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay, with vagrants on the Falkland Islands and an introduced population on Rapa Nui. It lives in open country, including grassy foothills, shrub-steppe, marshes, open woodland, plantations, villages, suburbs and cities, and it is often seen along roads and in mixed farmland. It is a resident in much of its range, though some southern birds move north in winter. The species is a general scavenger and predator, and it is the most common raptor in Argentine Patagonia.
