Chinese monal, Lophophorus lhuysii, is a pheasant from central China, breeding in the mountains of western Sichuan and southern Gansu. It belongs to the family Phasianidae and was described by Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, A, 1866. The bird is confined to a narrow mountain range in west-central China. Also known as the Chinese impeyan, it is the largest of the three monals and among the heavier members of its family, exceeded only by turkeys, peafowls and capercaillies. Males and females differ in length, and the male shows a drooping purple crest, iridescent plumage and a white rump.
