Chinspot Batis, Batis molitor, breeds in central and southern Africa and is a woodland bird of savanna, riverine thickets, bushveld and scrub. It also uses orchards, farmland, gardens and parks, and in the central African mountains it occurs up to 3,000 m. In southern Africa it is replaced in forest by Woodwards's Batis and Cape Batis, while Pririt Batis and Pale Batis take its place in drier western and wetter eastern woodlands. Four subspecies are recognised, with ranges from Gabon and Angola through the Congo basin to Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia, Botswana, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa.
