Chinstrap Penguin, Pygoscelis antarcticus, breeds in the Southern Ocean around Antarctica, including the Antarctic Peninsula and nearby islands, and it spends the non-breeding season mostly south of the Antarctic Convergence, reaching southern South America and subantarctic islands. It is a penguin with a narrow dark band beneath the head, the feature that gives it its name. It was first described by Forster in 1781. The accepted scientific name is Pygoscelis antarcticus.
