Christmas Island Frigatebird

Fregata andrewsi

The Christmas Island Frigatebird, scientifically known as Fregata andrewsi, is a large seabird found in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. This species is known for its striking appearance, with long, narrow wings, deeply forked tail, and a distinctive red gular sac that males inflate during courtship displays. Christmas Island Frigatebirds are highly adapted for aerial feeding and spend most of their time in flight, gliding over the ocean surface to catch fish and squid. They breed on remote islands and atolls, forming large colonies in coastal forests. Threats to their population include habitat destruction, disturbance at breeding sites, and accidental bycatch in fishing gear.
