Chucao Tapaculo

Scelorchilus rubecula

The Chucao Tapaculo is a small, secretive bird species found in the temperate rainforests of southern Chile and adjacent parts of Argentina. It is known for its distinctive vocalizations and elusive behavior, often foraging on the forest floor for insects and small invertebrates. This species has a dark plumage with a reddish-brown rump and a short tail. It is an important indicator of the health of its forest habitat and plays a role in the ecosystem as a predator of insects. Despite its relatively restricted range, the Chucao Tapaculo is not currently considered to be at risk of extinction.
