Cinereous Finch

Piezorina cinerea (Lafresnaye, 1843)

Thraupidae — Tanagers & Allies

Cinereous Finch, Piezorina cinerea, is a tanager from Peru in South America, where it breeds in arid coastal areas of the north. It is the only species placed in Piezorina. First described by Lafresnaye in 1843, it was originally named Guiraca cinerea. The type locality was later corrected to northwest Peru after an earlier belief that the specimen had come from the Galápagos Islands. A molecular study in 2014 placed it in Poospizinae and showed it to be close to the slender-billed finch.
