Strix sartorii (Ridgway, 1874)

Cinereous Owl, Strix sartorii, is an owl of Middle America, breeding in central Mexico. It is a Mexican endemic and was described by Ridgway in 1874. The bird is a large, round-headed owl with brownish grey upperparts marked by pale bars. Its face is greyish white to brownish grey, edged with darker brown and buff patterning, while the underparts are pale buff to white with dark streaks. It has been treated as a separate species on the basis of vocal and genetic differences.
