Coal-crested Finch Charitospiza eucosma is a passerine in the tanager family, found in central and eastern Brazil, north-east Bolivia and northern Argentina. It was first described by Oberholser in 1905. The bird is the only member of its genus. It is mainly associated with the Cerrado and dry savanna, and it favours places with exposed ground. Its long, spiky crest is a key feature, and both sexes show it. The species is resident, breeds in the rainy season, and has two breeding periods each year.
