Collared puffbird

Bucco capensis

The collared puffbird (Bucco capensis) is a medium-sized bird found in the tropical forests of South America. It is known for its distinctive call, a series of low hoots that can often be heard echoing through the forest. The collared puffbird has a stout body, large head, and a short tail. Its plumage is predominantly brown with a white collar around the neck. This species is a sit-and-wait predator, perching motionless for long periods while scanning for prey. It primarily feeds on insects and small vertebrates. Collared puffbirds are typically found in the understory of humid forests, where they forage for food and nest in tree cavities.
