Common Diving Petrel

Pelecanoides urinatrix

The Common Diving Petrel (Pelecanoides urinatrix) is a small seabird found in the southern oceans. It has a dark plumage with a white belly and distinctive white markings on its wings. These agile birds are excellent divers and feed on small fish and crustaceans. They are known for their characteristic plunging dives from the air to catch prey underwater. Common Diving Petrels breed in colonies on remote islands and coastal cliffs, where they nest in burrows. They are highly adapted to a life at sea and are rarely seen on land except during the breeding season.
