Common Loon

Gavia immer

The Common Loon, scientifically known as Gavia immer, is a large, distinctive waterbird found in North America. It has a striking black-and-white checkered back, a black head and neck, and a dagger-like bill. During the breeding season, its haunting, yodel-like calls can be heard across northern lakes and ponds. Common Loons are expert divers, using their strong legs and feet to propel themselves underwater in search of fish. They prefer freshwater lakes and large ponds with clear water and abundant fish. During the winter, they migrate to coastal waters. Conservation efforts are in place to protect their breeding habitats and reduce threats from pollution and human disturbance.
