The Common Merganser, also known as the Goosander in Europe, is a large diving duck found in freshwater habitats across North America, Europe, and Asia. These striking birds have long, slender bodies, serrated bills, and a distinctive crest on the male's head. Common Mergansers are skilled fishers and can often be seen diving underwater in search of prey. They are highly migratory, with populations in North America and Europe moving to open water during the winter months. Breeding pairs typically nest in tree cavities near water. The conservation status of the Common Merganser is of Least Concern according to the IUCN Red List.
