Common Nighthawk

Chordeiles minor

The Common Nighthawk is a medium-sized nocturnal bird known for its distinctive booming call and aerial acrobatics. With a wingspan of around 21 inches, it has a mottled gray and black plumage that provides excellent camouflage during the day. This species is primarily crepuscular and feeds on flying insects, using its wide mouth to catch prey in mid-air. Common Nighthawks are found in a variety of open habitats, including grasslands, urban areas, and forest edges. They are known for their impressive courtship displays, which involve steep dives and booming sounds. While not currently considered threatened, populations of Common Nighthawks are declining due to habitat loss and insect population declines.
