Common Pochard

Aythya ferina

The Common Pochard (Aythya ferina) is a medium-sized diving duck found in Europe and Asia. It is known for its striking red head and pale gray body. During the breeding season, the male displays a bright red head and neck, while the female has a more subdued brownish appearance. These ducks prefer freshwater habitats such as lakes, ponds, and marshes, where they dive to feed on aquatic plants, insects, and small crustaceans. The Common Pochard is considered to be of Least Concern by the IUCN, although its population is declining due to habitat loss and hunting pressure.
