Common Redstart

Phoenicurus phoenicurus

The Common Redstart is a small, insectivorous bird found in woodlands, parks, and gardens across Europe and Asia. Males have striking black and orange plumage, while females are more subdued with grey-brown coloring. These birds are known for their habit of flicking and spreading their tails, and their melodious, warbling song. They build cup-shaped nests in tree hollows or crevices, and lay a clutch of 5-6 eggs. Common Redstarts are migratory, spending the winter in sub-Saharan Africa. Their populations are generally stable, but they may be impacted by habitat loss and climate change.
