Common Snipe

Gallinago gallinago

The Common Snipe is a medium-sized wader with a distinctive long bill and cryptic plumage. It is known for its aerial displays during courtship, producing a 'drumming' sound by vibrating its outer tail feathers. This bird is typically found in wetlands, marshes, and bogs, using its long bill to probe for invertebrates in the mud. Its mottled brown and buff plumage provides excellent camouflage in its habitat. The Common Snipe is a migratory bird, breeding in northern Europe and Asia and wintering in southern Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia. Despite facing threats from habitat loss and hunting, its global population is currently considered stable.
