Cone-billed Tanager

Conothraupis mesoleuca (Berlioz, 1939)

Cone-billed Tanager is a bird of west-central Brazil in the family Thraupidae. It is endemic to Brazil and was first described from a male taken in Mato Grosso in 1938. The male is marked by black flanks, a strikingly pale grey bill, and a black crissum that often shows white spots. The female is said to resemble the female ultramarine grosbeak more than the female black-and-white tanager. After the original specimen, the bird was found again in 2003 and independently at the same site in 2004.
