Corn Bunting, Emberiza calandra, breeds across the Palearctic in open grassland, from the British Isles and western Europe through North Africa and the Middle East to north-west China. It is a passerine in the bunting family and is mainly resident, though some birds make short southward movements in winter. This is a large, bulky bunting with a dark eye and yellowish mandibles. The sexes look alike, and the male is only slightly larger. It favours open country with trees, including farmland and weedy wasteland, and in non-breeding periods it may be found in fields and reeds.
