Corncrake

Crex crex

The Corncrake (Crex crex) is a secretive bird species belonging to the rail family. It is known for its distinctive rasping call, which is often heard in European grasslands during the breeding season. This medium-sized bird has a cryptic plumage, with brown and buff streaks that provide excellent camouflage in its grassland habitat. The Corncrake is primarily a ground-dwelling bird, using its strong legs to navigate through dense vegetation. It is a migratory species, spending the winter in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite its widespread distribution, the Corncrake is considered a declining species due to agricultural intensification and habitat loss.
