Costa's Hummingbird

Calypte costae

The Costa's Hummingbird is a small, colorful hummingbird found in the southwestern United States and Baja California. The male has vibrant iridescent purple plumage on its head and throat, with a green back and a white underbelly. The female is less colorful, with a green back and gray underparts. These hummingbirds are known for their distinctive buzzing sound during flight, and they are often found in arid desert scrub and chaparral habitats. They are important pollinators of desert plants and are known for their agility and acrobatic flight patterns. Costa's Hummingbirds are relatively common and are not currently considered to be at risk.
