Crested Argus

Rheinardia ocellata

The Crested Argus is a large, ground-dwelling bird found in the forests of Southeast Asia. It is known for its striking plumage and distinctive crest. The male has a highly intricate and colorful pattern of feathers, while the female has more subdued plumage. These birds are known for their elaborate courtship displays, which involve vocalizations and intricate movements. Crested Argus are primarily found in dense, moist tropical forests, where they forage for insects, small mammals, and fruits on the forest floor. Unfortunately, habitat loss and hunting have led to population declines, and the species is considered vulnerable to extinction.
