Crested Kingfisher

Megaceryle lugubris

The Crested Kingfisher (Megaceryle lugubris) is a large, distinctive kingfisher found in East Asia. It has a striking appearance with a slate-blue back, white underparts, and a prominent shaggy crest. This species is known for its loud, harsh calls and its impressive diving skills as it hunts for fish along fast-flowing mountain streams and rivers. Crested Kingfishers are solitary and territorial, often perching on overhanging branches or rocks near the water. They are highly adapted to their aquatic lifestyle, with specialized beaks and strong, agile flight. Despite their striking appearance, they can be elusive and are often best observed from a distance.
