Crested Tern

Thalasseus bergii

The Crested Tern (Thalasseus bergii) is a seabird found in coastal regions of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is easily recognized by its black cap, shaggy crest, and slender body. These agile birds are skilled fishers, diving into the water to catch small fish and squid. They are highly social, often nesting in large colonies on sandy or rocky shores. The Crested Tern is known for its distinctive call, a sharp, piercing cry that echoes across the ocean. Although not currently considered threatened, these birds face challenges from habitat disturbance and human activities in their breeding areas.
