Cuban Kite

Chondrohierax wilsonii (Cassin, 1847)

Accipitridae — Kites, Hawks, Eagles

Cuban Kite, Chondrohierax wilsonii, is a bird of prey found in eastern Cuba. It belongs to the Accipitridae, the group that includes kites, hawks and eagles. Its separation from the mainland hook-billed kite was supported by mitochondrial DNA work, which indicated an ancient split from that lineage. The bird was described by Cassin in 1847. It is the Cuban form of the genus Chondrohierax and is restricted to the island’s east.
