Darjeeling Woodpecker

Dendrocoptes dorae

The Darjeeling Woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker found in the eastern Himalayas. It has distinctive black and white plumage with red markings on the head and neck. This species is known for its drumming behavior, using its bill to create rhythmic sounds on tree trunks to communicate and establish territory. The Darjeeling Woodpecker primarily forages for insects in mixed coniferous and broadleaf forests, often at higher elevations. It is an elusive and solitary bird, often observed moving stealthily through the forest canopy. While not much is known about its population trends, the Darjeeling Woodpecker is thought to be vulnerable to habitat loss and degradation.
