Dark-breasted Rosefinch

Procarduelis nipalensis (Hodgson, 1836)

Dark-breasted Rosefinch, Procarduelis nipalensis, breeds across the Himalayas, western and central China, and north-east Myanmar. It is a finch in the family Fringillidae, first described by Hodgson in 1836. The bird was once placed in Carpodacus before being assigned to Procarduelis. It is a medium-sized species with clear differences between the sexes. Males show dark pink plumage with a paler throat and eyebrow stripe, while females are dark brown with obvious pale wingbars. It can be told from the Vinaceous Rosefinch by the male head pattern and the female’s unstreaked underparts.
