Dark Pewee

Contopus lugubris

The Dark Pewee (Contopus lugubris) is a small, migratory bird found in Central and South America. It is known for its distinctive call, a plaintive 'pee-a-wee' often heard in its forested habitats. This species is primarily insectivorous, catching prey on the wing or by gleaning from foliage. Dark Pewees typically build cup-shaped nests in the understory of forests, often near water sources. They have a dark gray-brown plumage with a pale throat and belly. This species is not currently considered to be at risk, but habitat loss and deforestation are potential threats to its populations.
