Diamond Firetail

Stagonopleura guttata (Shaw, 1796)

Diamond Firetail, Stagonopleura guttata, is an Australian estrildid finch found in south-east Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and south-central South Australia. It lives in open grassy eucalypt forest and woodland, along with heath, mallee, farmland and grassland where trees are scattered. Its most striking feature is the bold black band across the white breast, set against black flanks marked with white spots and a bright red rump. The tail is black. It is a patchily distributed bird and is usually seen in pairs or small flocks.
