Dickcissel

Melanospiza richardsoni

The Dickcissel is a small, migratory bird found in grasslands and agricultural fields of North and South America. It is known for its distinctive song and yellow eyebrow stripe. This sparrow-sized bird has a stout bill and a brownish body with streaks on the breast and sides. During the breeding season, males display black throat patches and yellow chest patches. Dickcissels forage on seeds and insects, and they build cup-shaped nests on the ground or in low vegetation. Although their populations have declined due to habitat loss, they are still widespread and not currently considered at risk.
