Dieffenbach's Rail, Hypotaenidia dieffenbachii, was an extinct flightless rail of the Chatham Islands. It was endemic there and is now known only from a single living bird recorded in 1840, taken by Ernst Dieffenbach, whose name is preserved in both the common and scientific names. The species was later lost, with hunting and introduced predators blamed for its disappearance, possibly not long after 1872. It was once placed in Hypotaenidia, and some authorities still keep it in Gallirallus.
