Double-banded Plover

Anarhynchus bicinctus (Jardine & Selby, 1827)

Double-banded Plover, Anarhynchus bicinctus, breeds in New Zealand, including the North and South Islands, Stewart Island, the Chatham Islands and the Auckland Islands. Outside the breeding season it moves to coastal southern and eastern Australia, Tasmania, Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island and New Caledonia. It is a plover in the family Charadriidae. It is recognised by a dark grey-brown back, a white chest and two chest bands, one black and one brown. Younger birds lack these bands and are speckled brown above.
