Double-spurred Francolin

Pternistis bicalcaratus

The Double-spurred Francolin is a medium-sized bird native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is known for its distinctive double spurs on its legs and its mottled brown and black plumage, which provides effective camouflage in its woodland and savanna habitats. These birds are ground-dwellers, foraging for seeds, insects, and small invertebrates. They are often heard before they are seen, as they have a loud, repetitive call that echoes through the forest. The Double-spurred Francolin is a gamebird and is hunted for food in some regions, but its population is currently stable and not considered at risk.
