Double-spurred Spurfowl

Pternistis bicalcaratus (Linnaeus, 1766)

Phasianidae — Pheasants & Allies

Double-spurred Spurfowl, Pternistis bicalcaratus, is a pheasant in the Galliformes found in western and central Africa. It is a resident breeder across tropical West Africa, with a separate population in Morocco. The bird is associated with open country that has trees. It is notable for the male’s two spurs on each leg, with the upper spur blunt. The species nests in a lined scrape on the ground and lays 5 to 7 eggs. It is a discreet bird, and the male gives a mechanical krak-krak-krak from a mound in spring.
