Dusky Grouse

Dendragapus obscurus

The Dusky Grouse is a bird species native to western North America. It is known for its cryptic plumage, with males displaying a distinctive dark grayish-blue throat sac during courtship displays. These birds inhabit coniferous forests and montane shrublands, often foraging on the ground for a variety of plant matter, insects, and small vertebrates. Dusky Grouse are generally solitary outside of the breeding season, and their vocalizations include deep hooting sounds. While they are not considered globally threatened, habitat loss and disturbance from human activities can impact local populations.
