Dwarf Cassowary

Dwarf Cassowary, Casuarius bennetti, is a cassowary of New Guinea, Yapen and New Britain in the Bismarck Archipelago. It is the smallest living cassowary and a flightless bird with hard black plumage. The head carries a low triangular casque, with pink skin on the cheeks and red skin on the blue neck. The feet are strong, with dagger-like claws on the inner toe. Females are larger, with longer casques and brighter bare skin. It was first described by Gould in 1857.
