Eared Quetzal

Euptilotis neoxenus (Gould, 1838)

Eared Quetzal, Euptilotis neoxenus, is a trogon of Middle America, breeding in western Mexico. It lives in pine-oak woodland and oak-conifer forest, especially where streams run through the habitat. The bird is tied to the middle and upper forest levels and is also known from canyons in the Sierra Madre Occidental. Its most distinctive feature is the wispy ear plumes that give it its name, though these are seldom easy to see in the field. It was first described by Gould in 1838 and is the only species in its genus.
