Eastern Buzzard

Buteo japonicus Temminck & Schlegel, 1845

Eastern Buzzard, Buteo japonicus, breeds in the Oriental Region across central and southern Siberia, Mongolia, north-east China and Japan. It is a bird of prey in the Accipitridae family, described by Temminck and Schlegel in 1845. Also known as the Japanese buzzard, it has been treated by some authorities as a separate species and by others as part of the wider common buzzard complex. It is similar to the steppe buzzard. Four subspecies are recognised, including forms breeding in Siberia, Mongolia, northern China, North Korea, Japan and the island groups of Izu, Bonin and Daito.
