Eastern Meadowlark

Sturnella magna

The Eastern Meadowlark is a medium-sized songbird found in grasslands and open areas of eastern North America. It is known for its distinctive flute-like song and bright yellow breast with a black V-shaped bib. The species is primarily ground-dwelling and forages for insects, seeds, and small fruits. Eastern Meadowlarks are often seen perched on fence posts or low shrubs, singing to establish territories or attract mates. They are known for their elaborate courtship displays, which involve aerial displays and ground-based behaviors. Habitat loss and agricultural intensification have led to population declines in some areas, resulting in conservation concerns for this iconic grassland bird.
