Eastern Parotia, Parotia helenae, is a bird-of-paradise from montane south-eastern New Guinea. It was described by De Vis in 1897 and belongs to the passerine order and the family Paradisaeidae. Also called Helena’s parotia, it is confined to mountain forest in the Bird’s Tail Peninsula of Papua New Guinea. The name commemorates Princess Helena Augusta Victoria, daughter of Queen Victoria. In this species, the male is polygamous and carries out an elaborate display on the forest floor. It is a common bird within its restricted range and appears on CITES Appendix II.
