Eastern Rockhopper Penguin, Eudyptes filholi, breeds on islands in the Indian Ocean and around Australasia, including Prince Edward, Crozet, Kerguelen, Heard, Macquarie, the Antipodes, Auckland and Campbell. It is a crested penguin and is one of the smallest in that group. A useful field mark is the pink edging around the bill. It was first described by Hutton in 1879. The species is found in the southern Indian and Pacific oceans and returns to land to breed and moult. Its crest feathers are yellow, and it is separated from the western rockhopper penguin by its range and bill markings.
