Megascops asio

The Eastern Screech Owl, scientific name Megascops asio, is a small, nocturnal owl found in woodlands, parks, and suburban areas of eastern North America. This owl is known for its distinctive trilling and whinnying calls during the night. It has excellent camouflage with its mottled gray or reddish-brown plumage, allowing it to blend into tree bark and foliage. The Eastern Screech Owl primarily preys on small mammals, birds, and insects. It nests in tree cavities and is known for its adaptability to human-altered landscapes. Despite some habitat loss, the species is currently of Least Concern according to the IUCN Red List.
