Eastern Screech Owl

Megascops asio (Linnaeus, 1758)

Strigidae — Owls

Eastern Screech Owl, Megascops asio, breeds from south-eastern and south-central Canada through North America into north-eastern Mexico, and is found across much of eastern North America. It is a stocky owl with a short tail, and it uses woodland of many kinds. It also takes to urban and other developed places more readily than many owls. Although it often lives near people, it is hard to notice because it is active at night. The species was first described by Linnaeus in 1758.
