Antrostomus vociferus
The Eastern Whip-poor-will is a nocturnal bird known for its distinctive call that sounds like 'whip-poor-will'. This medium-sized bird is primarily active at night and is well-camouflaged with mottled brown and gray plumage, making it difficult to spot during the day. It is a master of aerial foraging, catching insects on the wing using its wide mouth and short bill. Found in open woodlands, scrubby areas, and forest edges, the Eastern Whip-poor-will prefers habitats with dense undergrowth and leaf litter where it can roost and nest on the ground. This species is known for its secretive nature and is often more easily heard than seen.
