Echo Parakeet

Psittacula bensoni

The Echo Parakeet (Psittacula bensoni) is a critically endangered parrot species endemic to the island of Mauritius. These medium-sized parakeets are known for their vibrant green plumage, red beak, and distinctive calls. They primarily inhabit the upland forests of the Black River Gorges National Park, where they forage on a diet of native fruits, seeds, and flowers. Habitat loss, hunting, and introduced predators have led to a drastic decline in their population. Conservation efforts, including captive breeding and habitat restoration, are underway to save this species from extinction.
