Elegant Euphonia, Chlorophonia elegantissima, is a finch of Middle America, breeding from Mexico through Central America to western Panama. It belongs to the family Fringillidae and was first described by Bonaparte in 1838. The species is strongly split across its range, with populations in north-western Mexico, much of Mexico and northern Central America, and the mountains from central Costa Rica into Panama. It lives in pine-oak, evergreen and secondary forest in upper tropical and subtropical zones, and often keeps to trees carrying mistletoe.
